Stalls That Tried To Steal Limelight

Posted by spymama on Sep-30-2008

Yesterday, I looked around trying to look for a recipe for Roti Prata. I found many different types of recipe but not sure which is a good one. Spymama actually has a lovely flat flat pan that the indians used to make those Tosai, Pratas (Canais) or any Indian breads. I used it like a griddle pan. Just place it on the stove and light up. It’s not really expensive.

In the evenings, Spymama and Spypapa used to hang out with some buddies at this Prata place located in Clementi Road. They sell yummy Prata with bananas, very much like those Banana Caramel Crepes. The savoury ones are the Roti Prata or the Cheese Prata, which the place is terribly famous for. Lots of NUS students and youths love to hang out here. Next door is the Fong Seng Nasi Lemak which is also very popular for it’s Nasi Lemak, of course. There was a time when the Chong Pang Nasi Lemak opened a shop just so near (was it next door or the next?). I don’t understand why would someone want to open a nasi lemak shop when you already have a popular one there. Some business owners do that. When you have one popular shop selling an item, there’s bound to be another one to try to reap the overflowing customers. Why not sell another food item instead. Why do they want to be in the shadow?

I’ve seen this kind of attitude happening in many places too. Some have the cheek to dress up their stalls exactly the same as the famous one. Some even do up the sign boards almost identical. It’s as if they are trying to trick the customers to fall into the trap that they are the popular stalls.

There’s Katong Laksa, Soya Beancurd, Nasi Lemak, Ice Kacang and more! Did you ever fell for it and end up going buying at the wrong stall instead?

Soup for the Soul

Posted by spymama on Sep-26-2008

The weather is getting colder lately. It’s been pouring. This is all part of global warming, I guess. Some places flooding, ice and glaciers melting. And extreme weather conditions.

But WAIT!!! It’s not all that Bad.

Spymama has a Special Soup for YOU!

I made Minestrone Soup with lots of Vegetable and some little bits of Alphabet Pasta. So if you happen to drop by here and find me not sipping Teh Tarik, please help yourself to a bowl of soup.

Hope it makes your heart warm and fuzzy for a Great Weekend. Don’t forget to smile and make a stranger happy. It could be me that you bumped into! *grin*

Green Earthling and the Bird-Man

Posted by spymama on Sep-22-2008

In local context, ‘bird-man’ is not a comfy word. Why? Because for chinese, in particular, it is used when someone is labelled as a ‘jerk’ or ‘jerk-ass’. Some chinese prefer to use this word by adding ‘blue’ before ‘bird-man’ towards the same gesture. Of course when I am explaining this context, it is used in the dialect ‘Hokkien’ and not in English. It is an insult to scold or to be scold ‘bird-man’ but some times there are some who fooled around too. It is a language commonly used more in a vulgar form. Those who are from the countries in Malaysia and Singapore will probably have heard of it.

But then, Spymama also loves to visit this kopitiam where the ‘bird-man’ is usually hanging out. And when I meant ‘bird-man’, I don’t mean someone vulgar, nor do i mean someone who is a jerk-ass of course. Because this fella, is none other than the real ‘bird-man’. He has 2 parrots with him most of the time. He frequents this local eatery and lives in this town. Spymama sometimes gets the honour to sit on the next table and with darting eyes, from my plate of Chicken Rice, Laksa, and Wantan Mee, looks at this green earthling that is also looking at my plate. A grey one sits on his shoulder.

A star of the place, sometimes can’t be help, these birds gets some stares, kids’ pointing fingers, ladies trying to get fresh with the owner. ( okay, i don’t think they were trying to get fresh, just asking about the birds). Not perturbed by them, all it wants (the green parrot) is something from my plate. Sometimes I thought of giving it an occasional Chye Sim from my plate but I don’t want a reaction from the ‘bird-man’. Spymama is quiet and keeps her movements slo-mo throughout so it doesn’t ruffle it’s feather and flick that bits of feather to garnish my meal.

But for once this time, Spymama took a picture of it. To keep ‘bird-man’s’ anonymousity, no face is being shown. I swear it was just staring at me.

Blog Block and Green Mussels

Posted by spymama on Sep-15-2008

Spymama has been really feeling very lazy to update her blogs in the past two weeks. Do you feel it? I keep telling myself tomorrow tomorrow tomorrow. And tomorrow never comes. Could it be the durians that I have been consuming? I also read about Durian Fusion lately. It is a new product that they extract the juice of the Durian like what you would get from a bottle of juice. It doesn’t turn me on, frankly. hahaha!

But I did read that Durians has a lot of benefits such as perk a person up, especially one that is depressed or down. It has some happy ingredients. It also claims that it can increase one’s libido too. hmmm. You can try to google Benefits of Durian if you want to find out more. LOL

Also, Spypapa cooked up a mean dish of Green Mussels! Have you ever tried it before? It is a kind of shelfish and it is great when it is cooked with lots of chilly and an egg drop mixture.

I Need Snacks To Go With My Tea

Posted by spymama on Sep-11-2008

Of all things that I love on a nice cool evening breeze, is the Teh Tarik. Creamy, sweet and frothy from the ‘tariking’ by the mamak man. And when Claire offered me a Cuppa from her blog, Spymama went searching for her tea cup.

Why would I need own tea cup? Well this is no ordinary tea cup. This is the metal one that you can use to do your own pulled tea aka Teh Tarik.

So I added some creamy condensed milk, some evaporated milk and little bit sugar and Spymama really ‘tarrrikkkk’ the tea long long. And it was really great. A nice soothing drink after recovering from throat that feels like sandpaper.

Here is a video on my blogspot for you to see the mamaks doing Teh Tarik

And here is the award given by Claire.

I would like to share this award and my teh tarik with all the bloggers who wanna have a tea party with me. Tell me what you are going to bring with you. Kuehs, Scones, Sandwiches, Roti Jala, anything. Tell me okay?

Not Quite Over the Moon Over Mooncakes

Posted by spymama on Sep-8-2008

Spypapa has been bringing in mooncakes since the past week. I really have no space for them. There’s only so much you can really eat because the are really too sweet in general and Spymama don’t really fancy them. Once Spypapa brought home some Durian mooncakes that cost a lot from Goodwood Park Hotel, and it was just left in the fridge till it became mouldy. No one would eat it!

But then last few days, Spypapa brought home those from Eater Palace. Yayy! That was the only one that Spymama eats because it has no Lotus Paste. It is filled with nice crust and sweet potato and yam filling. Now, that was nice. Spykiddos have not interests in any of the mooncakes so I figured I should just give the others to my neighbours, if they gladly accept them.

Spymama also walked past a durian stall today and looked at the durians parading beautifully and calling out to Spymama.. should buy or not? Now they are going for 4 boxes for only $10!! A box generally has about 5-6 seeds.

Swollen Throat Now

Posted by spymama on Sep-4-2008

Spymama had been feeling under the weather after the weekend of gorging on Durians. Show you the full picture here after that little miserable teaser.

I also like to thanks for the nice concern Zara, Mott and Rose.

You know, Mott.. I remembered my momma used to tell me about drinking water from the cavity to get rid of heatiness too. I definitely would have done that but alas, the durians I bought were all stored in styrofoam containers. Seems like the modern society nowadays sell durians this way. They rid the durian ’shells’ once they emptied into the containers. Next time I gotta stand there and ask those Durian sellers to let me pack a small segment back in a plastic bag,..

Then yesterday, Spymama could not contain her wanting to have something spicy and made my throat worst. It was seeing this yummy looking Ayam Penyet at the food centre than I pointed out (since my voice already croaking) and asked for that..  In my pea brain, I figured that fighting fire with fire should be at it’s worst. How big can the fire become? And guess what? Today, my throat feels like it is all swollen and swallowing my saliva was terribly painful.. sigh sigh sigh

Naughty Spymama. I should just whip myself. And to make it worst, Spykiddo 1 is having fever and Spykiddo 2 is having flu. Gonna be resting early tonight to keep an eye on them Spykiddos. Today we have a large pot of homemade barley.

Have a restful night everyone.

Zara’s Lovely Award

Posted by spymama on Sep-3-2008

Created By Zara

This Zara is so nice. She is giving me awards after awards. What can I say. Spymama wants to do some lovely awards too but gonna get that darn photo editing software first. Then only can send out. But in the meantime, Spymama just do some happy somersaults first.

I’ve been recovering from a bad throat. Perhaps I had too much durians. I was feeling a little hot yesterday in the afternoon. Took some paracetamol and slept. Woke up and had some cooling tea but lucky perspiration made me better.
